Human Freedom Index – India ranks 111 out of 162 countries

India's position on the index is quite worrying. India ranks 111th position out of 162 countries in Human freedom index, even though the list was published few months (2020) before we think this is important to discuss now. India ranked 94th position in 2019 and in 2020 India falls 17 spots to 111th rank. This is very scary considering the present situation and for the country who got independence more than 70 years before and where freedom comes in our fundamental rights.

What is Human freedom index?

Before jumping into the discussion on India’s performance in Human Freedom Index we must know what is Human freedom index and what are the parameters to measure this. The Human Freedom Index is a source that can be used to analyze the relationship between freedom and other social, economic factors, as well as the ways in which the greatness of freedom meets. The Human Freedom Index presents the state of human freedom in the world in terms of a broad range of personal, social and economic freedoms.

On the scale of 0 to 10, 10 indicates more freedom and 0 the least, the average human freedom rating for 162 countries in 2018 was 6.93.

Human freedom is a social concept that recognizes human dignity and is defined here as a negative freedom or the absence of a barrier to coercion. Because freedom is so important in nature and contributes to human progress, it is worthwhile to weigh carefully. The report was published jointly by the Cato Institute and the Fraser Institute.

76 unique indicators of personal and economic freedom in the following areas are –

The index was published by the American think tank Cato Institute and the Fraser Institute in Canada. A total of 76 indicators of personal, social and economic freedom are projected to set at 162 countries from 2008 to 2018. The institutions said the world had seen a dramatic decline in human freedom since 2008.

India ranks 111 out of 162 countries

As per Human freedom index 2020 India stands at 111th position where as India was at 94th position according to 2019 report. This clearly shows that personal and economic freedom of India is reducing as per the reports and the numbers. India's position on the index is quite worrying.

The number says that India is doing very poorly in the measure of freedom of speech, which creates points based on freedom of speech, laws and regulations affecting media content, political pressures and control of media content and the dress code of society etc.

India gained 6.30 out of 10 on personal freedom and 6.56 on economic freedom. The total amount of human freedom in the country was 6.43.  overall human freedom score of India in 2020 was 6.43. India is ranked ahead of China and Bangladesh, ranked 129th and 139th in the 2020 index respectively.

The Global Economic Freedom Index 2020 released in September showed that India has shrunk by 26 places from 79 to 105. The report, prepared by the Fraser Institute of Canada, was published in India in collaboration with the New Delhi-based Center of Civil Society.

 

Who topped the Human freedom Index 2020?

New Zealand, Switzerland, Hong Kong SAR, China, Denmark, Australia tops the chart with most freedom countries. New Zealand has human freedom rating of 8.87 and Switzerland is 8.82 which is more than the average rating of all countries. These countries have more economic and personal freedom.


What country has the least freedom?

Iran, Islamic, Yemen, Venezuela, Sudan, Syrian Arab Republic last the list with least freedom index rating. Average rating of these countries is around 4 which is far below the total countries average.
