Suicide and Depression-Reason for Depression and Suicide

Suicide rate is increasing exponentially over year. According to the reports around 800,000 people commit suicide every year around the world and in India average of 381 people suicide every day. Suicide rate among youth and adolescence is highest; the people in the age group of 15-29 have higher suicide rate than other age groups. Are all these suicides are only due to depression? , when we hear about someone committing suicide the first think comes to our mind is depression. No, depression is not only the culprit, fear and anxiety is also a part of the reason. Youth suicide rates are increasing because of their fear of losing, fear of failing and fear of what society thinks about them. Suicide due to financial reason is also a major cause. The topic of depression and suicide has became a trending news with the suicide of actor Sushant Singh Rajput and preliminary results shows that he has committed suicide due to depression. The correlation between suicide and depression is growing over days and people confirm that depressions are the main reason of suicide.

Suicide rate during lockdown was very high; recently we heard news about a girl suicide in Kerala because she can’t attend online class for some day, boy suicide due to fear of losing in NEET, family suicide due to economic crisis, jobless people suicide. Yes, all these people had a reason for suicide, but are these the reason to end your valuable life? Is there no solution for these issues? The reason is we are educated but we are not educated enough to fight against any situation, accept the failures or learn from failures.

What is Depression?

What is Depression

Depression is a disorder characterized by mood swings that indicate a measure of sadness or a lack of interest in life. Depression is a state of emotional turmoil that causes a constant feeling of sadness and loss of interest and can interfere with your daily activities. Most people feel sad or depressed at times. It is a normal reaction to the loss or challenges of life. But when major grief involves feeling worthless, hopeless, and worthless, it lasts for days to weeks and prevents you from living your life; it can be more than just sadness. You may have clinical depression, a medical condition that can be treated. Potential causes include a combination of biological, psychological and social stress sources. Increasingly, research suggests that these substances may cause changes in brain function, including altered function of certain neural cycles in the brain. You will be shocked to know that 300 million people suffer from depression worldwide.

What is Anxiety?

Anxiety can be common in stressful situations such as talking in public or doing a test. Anxiety is a normal part of life. Anxiety is a mental and physical reaction to stressful, dangerous, or unusual situations. It is a feeling of unhappiness, depression, or fear that you feel before an important event. But anxiety disorders involve more than just temporary anxiety or fear. In a person with anxiety disorder, anxiety does not go away and may develop over time. Symptoms can interfere with daily activities such as work, homework, and relationships. Examples of anxiety disorders include general anxiety, social phobia, certain phobias and dementia. Reason for Suicide

Reason for Suicide

The number of suicide is growing exponentially and it has become a common topic among the youth. Obviously depression and anxiety are the major reason behind suicide, but the question is why suicide? The whole society is responsible for each and every suicide happening daily. The way we were grown up, the way our education is, the way our parents teach us are the reasons for suicide. Our education system teaches us that marks are most important, or parents thought only victory, no one taught us that there is a failure too, no one taught us how to face a problem, how to fight a situation. All these literally lead to depression and anxiety which in turns result to suicide in most. The way society teases us based on our background, color, gender, income, marks etc are the major reason. The pressure on children by society and parents to achieve height made them a puppet of their hands, killing all abilities and thinking skills of children. These over caring parenting leads to behavioral inhibition in children, they are afraid to take any decision, studies shows that children behavioral inhibition are more prose for depression in their later ages and they fell helpless and even ends with suicide.

The run for money, achievements and positions, most people forget their happiness and the way to find enjoyment in their life. Stress among the people increases, suicide among MBBS students is very high due to the parental pressure and work load. Suicide is the leading cause of death in the age group of 18-29.

Suicide due to financial crisis is also very high in countries like India, in these lockdown days we have heard hundreds of new of family committing suicide due to financial crisis. Businessmen committing suicides due to loss are also very high, fathers killing whole families since they can’t find any money.  Farmer’s committing suicide in a country is a pathetic situation of a country. Farmers are also committing suicides due to financial crisis. Lack of help is the main reason behind these types of suicides, government and other official bodies should help hands to reduce the number of suicide.

There will be many reasons behind suicides or they may not be any particular reason according to your eyes. But the reality is there will be a small or a big reason for them. Studies show that the reason for the majority of suicides can be solved or actually it is not a reason. Reasons like financial crises can be avoided with the help of the Government or any other bodies.  Reason like depression can be solved with your support, when SSR committed suicide due to depression everyone replied that you “he should have talked to someone”, similarly there are thousands of Sushant around you, recognize them and give them support and pull them out of that stage.

The total number of people living with depression has increased by 18.4% in 10 years between 2005-2015 and it is estimated to be very high in 2020. Reports show that COVID-19 has tripled the depression rates. We all are concerned about COVID-19, we all talk about other diseases but never concerned about depression. Since the suicide rates increased in lockdown days, we started talking about the stage of depression. You will be shocked to know that 300 million people suffer from depression worldwide. India is the most depressed country in the world followed by China and US. As of 2015 around 56,675,969 people suffer from depression in India this is about 45% of Indian population. 42.5% of corporate employees in India suffer from depression. Government estimates that about 1in 5 people need counseling, 3 out of every 100 residents in urban areas are estimated to suffer from depression. The rate of anxiety and depression among corporate employees increased by 45-50% between 2008 and 2015. 36% of Indians are likely to suffer from major depression at some part of life.

Nearly 38.5% of corporate employees sleep less than 6 hours a day, causing diseases like depression, hypertension, diabetes. Causes of depression may be many like drug and alcohol use, medical illness, personality, stress, abuse, sleeplessness or family history. Depression is usually caused by a combination of recent events and other long-term or personal events, rather than a single release or one instantaneous event.

Mental pain is less dramatic than physical pain, but it is more common and also harder to bear.

-L.S Lewis

Depression can work in families and some people will be at risk for genetic predisposition. However, having a parent or a close relative who is depressed does not mean that you will have the same experience. Drug and alcohol use can also lead to depression. Many depressed people have a substance abuse problem. Factors such as depression, alcohol or drug abuse, and hormonal changes also affect the chemical and mental and emotional well-being. Some health conditions can cause symptoms such as depression. For example, hypothyroidism is known to cause depression in some people. Past physical, sexual, or emotional abuse can increase the risk of clinical depression later in life.

Another important factor is social media influence, you will feel worthless while comparing to others. You have a feeling that you don’t have anything and no one likes you. It is seen that the person with high talent may lose confidence in social media hype. The pattern of showoff seen in social media, makes you feel that you don’t have talent, money, beauty or value. Since social media is a free platform, it has become a platform for bullying anyone openly. All these social media effects may also lead you to depression.
