Several theories have been proposed, one is the combination of high altitude, high winds and fog that surrounds the birds and they are attracted to the village lights (the birds are called strays) as a source of flight stabilization. Reason behind mass suicide of birds in Assam village

Although the birds are sometimes instigated to their deaths (although almost certainly not intentional), it is believed that the villagers in Jatinga who is reason for this, may not be intentionally, but the real reason is believed to be crashing with trees and building. After sunset, between 7 and 10 pm, hundreds of birds plummeting to their deaths by crashing into buildings and trees. The villagers grabbed the birds with bamboo poles, believing them to be "spirits flying from the sky to scare them".

Wildlife and bird communities in India went to the Jatinga village to make them aware about the incident and to prevent mass killings of these birds.
